More and more monolithic integrated circuits that process data as light pulses instead of electrical signals are emerging. This video presents Infinera's photonic integrated circuit, which is virtually a complete optical system on a single chip. Its inputs accept 10 electrical signals at 10 Gbits/second which are then converted by the IC into laser pulses. These are then encoded and multiplexed so they can be sent over a single optical fiber by the IC's output.
